Interracial marriage in US hits new high: 1 in 12

HOLD FOR RELEASE 12:01 A.M. EST; Chart shows trend in interacial marriage

HOLD FOR RELEASE 12:01 A.M. EST; Chart shows trend in interacial marriage

(AP) ? Interracial marriages in the U.S. have climbed to 4.8 million ? a record 1 in 12 ? as a steady flow of new Asian and Hispanic immigrants expands the pool of prospective spouses. Blacks are now substantially more likely than before to marry whites.

A Pew Research Center study, released Thursday, details a diversifying America where interracial unions and the mixed-race children they produce are challenging typical notions of race.

"The rise in interracial marriage indicates that race relations have improved over the past quarter century," said Daniel Lichter, a sociology professor at Cornell University. "Mixed-race children have blurred America's color line. They often interact with others on either side of the racial divide and frequently serve as brokers between friends and family members of different racial backgrounds," he said. "But America still has a long way to go."

The figures come from previous censuses as well as the 2008-2010 American Community Survey, which surveys 3 million households annually. The figures for "white" refer to those whites who are not of Hispanic ethnicity. For purposes of defining interracial marriages, Hispanic is counted as a race by many in the demographic field.

The study finds that 8.4 percent of all current U.S. marriages are interracial, up from 3.2 percent in 1980. While Hispanics and Asians remained the most likely, as in previous decades, to marry someone of a different race, the biggest jump in share since 2008 occurred among blacks, who historically have been the most segregated.

States in the West where Asian and Hispanic immigrants are more numerous, including Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico and California, were among the most likely to have couples who "marry out" ? more than 1 in 5. The West was followed by the South, Northeast and Midwest. By state, mostly white Vermont had the lowest rate of intermarriage, at 4 percent.

In all, more than 15 percent of new marriages in 2010 were interracial.

The numbers also coincide with Pew survey data showing greater public acceptance of mixed marriage, coming nearly half a century after the Supreme Court in 1967 barred race-based restrictions on marriage. (In 2000, Alabama became the last state to lift its unenforceable ban on interracial marriages.) About 83 percent of Americans say it is "all right for blacks and whites to date each other," up from 48 percent in 1987. As a whole, about 63 percent of those surveyed say it "would be fine" if a family member were to marry outside their own race.

Minorities, young adults, the higher educated and those living in Western or Northeast states were more likely to say mixed marriages are a change for the better for society. The figure was 61 percent for 18- to 29-year-olds, for instance, compared to 28 percent for those 65 and older.

Due to increasing interracial marriages, multiracial Americans are a small but fast-growing demographic group, making up about 9 million, or 8 percent of the minority population. Together with blacks, Hispanics and Asians, the Census Bureau estimates they collectively will represent a majority of the U.S. population by mid-century.

"Race is a social construct; race isn't real," said Jonathan Brent, 28. The son of a white father and Japanese-American mother, Brent helped organize multiracial groups in southern California and believes his background helps him understand situations from different perspectives.

Brent, now a lawyer in Charlottesville, Va., says at varying points in his life he has identified with being white, Japanese and more recently as someone of mixed ethnic background. He doesn't feel constrained with whom he socially interacts or dates.

"Race is becoming a personal thing. It is what I feel like I am," he said.

According to the Pew report, more than 25 percent of Hispanics and Asians who married in 2010 had a spouse of a different race. That's compared to 17.1 percent of blacks and 9.4 percent of whites. Of the 275,500 new interracial marriages in 2010, 43 percent were white-Hispanic couples, 14.4 percent were white-Asian, 11.9 percent were white-black, and the remainder were other combinations.

Still, the share of Asians who intermarried has actually declined recently ? from 30.5 percent in 2008 to 27.7 percent in 2010. In contrast, blacks who married outside their race increased in share from 15.5 percent to 17.1 percent, due in part to a rising black middle class that has more interaction with other races.

Intermarriage among whites rose in share slightly, while among Hispanics the rate was flat, at roughly 25.7 percent.

"In the past century, intermarriage has evolved from being illegal, to be a taboo and then to be merely unusual. And with each passing year, it becomes less unusual," said Paul Taylor, director of Pew's Social & Demographic Trends project. "That says a lot about the state of race relations. Behaviors have changed and attitudes have changed."

He noted that interracial marriages among Hispanics and Asians may be slowing somewhat as recent immigration and their rapid population growth provide minorities more ethnically similar partners to choose from. But Taylor believes the longer-term trend of intermarriage is likely to continue.

"For younger Americans, racial and ethnic diversity are a part of their lives," he said.

The Pew study also tracks some divorce trends, citing studies using government data that found overall divorce rates higher for interracial couples. One study conducted a decade ago determined that mixed-race couples had a 41 percent chance of separation or divorce, compared to a 31 percent chance for those who married within their race.

Another analysis found divorce rates among mixed-race couples to be more dependent on the specific race combination, with white women who married outside their race more likely to divorce. Mixed marriages involving blacks and whites also were considered least stable, followed by Hispanic-white couples.

Other findings:

?Broken down by gender, black men were more than twice as likely as black women to marry someone outside their race ? 24 percent to 9 percent. The reverse held true for Asian men ? 17 percent intermarried, compared to 36 percent among Asian women.

?White-Asian couples who married had the highest median income, nearly $71,000. Behind them were the following race combinations: Asian-Asian ($62,000), white-white ($60,000), white-Hispanic ($57,900), white-black ($53,187), black-black ($47,700) and Hispanic-Hispanic (nearly $36,000).

?The top three states for white-black married couples are Virginia, North Carolina and Kansas, all with rates of about 3 percent.

Legal Schnauzer: Alabama Lawyer With Strong Ties to GOP Turns ...

An Alabama lawyer with roundabout connections to our Legal Schnauzer story was found dead at a Shelby County construction site late yesterday morning.

The body of Chace William Swatek, 35, was found behind a stack of metal pipes near the Shelby County Services Building in Pelham. Law-enforcement officials say the cause of death is not known, but they do not suspect foul play.

Swatek had powerful family ties to the Alabama Republican Party. His older brother, Dax, is head of the lobbying/consulting firm Swatek Azbell Howe & ?Ross. Dax Swatek was 2006 campaign manager for former GOP Governor Bob Riley--he of the ties to GOP felons Jack Abramoff and Michael Scanlon--and is a protege of Bill Canary, president of the Business Council of Alabama. Canary, of course, is the husband of Leura Canary, Bush-era prosecutor in the Don Siegelman case and instigator of the federal bingo prosecution, which is being retried at this moment in Montgomery. Dax Swatek also played a prominent early role in the bingo fiasco. (More on that in a moment.)

For good measure, Chace's sister is actress Barrett Swatek, an outspoken conservative (despite her less than "family values" lifestyle) who seems to be a serious bud of Sean Hannity.

What about ties to my personal legal story? Chace Swatek was the youngest son of Pelham attorney William E. Swatek, a central figure in the 12-year legal battle Mrs. Schnauzer and I have been forced to fight. As regular readers know, Bill Swatek was largely responsible for a bogus lawsuit that our criminally inclined neighbor Mike McGarity filed against me, bringing monumental legal heartache to our family unit and leading both of us to be cheated out of our jobs.

I've written extensively about the unethical (and probably criminal) stunts Bill Swatek and his judicial cronies have pulled against my wife and me. To say that I hold Bill Swatek and everyone associated with him in utter contempt would be an understatement. In fact, the Legal Schnauzer blog never would have started without the courtroom cheat job Bill Swatek set in motion.

Now in my 55th year of living, I've yet to meet another human being who comes close to Bill Swatek's level of wretchedness. At the risk of sounding cold-hearted, it's safe to say that I wasn't exactly broken up about news of Chace Swatek's demise. If ever a family deserved to have some bad karma come its way, it's the Swatek clan.

It's not just a matter of Bill Swatek screwing over the missus and me. He's been using his position as "an officer of the court" to cheat people for years. I've seen his file of professional misconduct at the Alabama State Bar office in Montgomery, and it's about a foot thick. Bill Swatek has been disciplined by the bar three times, including a suspension of his license for acts of "fraud, dishonesty, misrepresentation, and deceit." He was tried for perjury in a well-publicized criminal trial back in the early 1980s. A Jefferson County jury found him not guilty, even though court records include tape-recorded proof that Bill Swatek was guilty as charged--that he, in fact, lied to a committee of the state bar in an official proceeding.

We've laid out Bill Swatek's ugly history in probably close to 100 posts. Here are three pieces that pretty much sum it up:

Here's Why Americans Hate Lawyers

What Are These Wacky Alabama GOPers Up to Now?

Bill Swatek: A Portrait of Alabama Sleaze in the Age of Rove

The post at that last link was the introduction to a trilogy we produced, using video, newspaper clippings, and court documents to illustrate the depth of Bill Swatek's depravity. You can check out those three posts here and ask yourself, "How on earth does this guy still have a bar card?"

An Alabama Portrait of Sleaze in the Age of Rove, Part I

An Alabama Portrait of Sleaze in the Age of Rove, Part II

An Alabama Portrait of Sleaze in the Age of Rove, Part III

For good measure, we have video of Bill Swatek essentially stealing the full property rights to our home on the steps of the Shelby County Courthouse. My wife and I have an ongoing federal lawsuit against Mr. Swatek and various Shelby County officials over that little charade. You can watch the video at the end of this post.

If you think Bill Swatek caused us grief, just check out what he did to a Trussville man named Lawrence Weems. Mr. Weems wound up with numerous bullet holes in him, thanks largely to Swatek's corrupt handling of a divorce case.

Public documents indicate that Bill Swatek passed along nasty tendencies to his offspring. Dax Swatek, as we've noted, has strong ties to Bob Riley and Bill Canary. It's not so well known that Dax Swatek was deeply involved in Riley's anti-gambling campaign. We've shown that Dax Swatek has a habit of issuing threats against people he views as political enemies, even fellow conservatives and avowed Christians:

Aides to Riley Helped Drive Anti-Gambling Crusade in Alabama

Riley Aide Threatens Christian Coalition Leader Over Gambling

These two posts make it clear that Dax Swatek played a pivotal role in the unrest over gambling that led to the federal bingo prosecution currently unfolding in Montgomery. That first post shows that Riley aides, including Dax Swatek, pushed the governor to fight gambling initiatives:

According to a 2007 lawsuit filed by the chairman of the Christian Coalition of Alabama, several top aides to Riley played prominent roles in stirring the governor's anti-gambling passion. And that led to what some reporters have called "the bingo wars of 2010," the biggest political story of the year in our state--and that was before the recent arrests. . . .

Dr. Randy Brinson states in the lawsuit that Riley initially was neutral in 2007 when a bill to tax and regulate gambling was introduced in the Alabama Legislature. But when Brinson and the Christian Coalition threw their support behind the bill, HB 527, several Riley aides took quick action. And their concerns had nothing to do with a genuine opposition to gambling in Alabama. In fact, the aides and Riley were up to their necks in gambling interests.

In the lawsuit, Brinson states:

"These persons knew that Riley's connections with Las Vegas and Mississippi gambling entities, combined with his stance against gambling in Alabama that resulted from these connections, would make it easier to enlist his opposition."

Who were these associates? Brinson names them: Dax Swatek, Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh, Toby Roth, and Ken Wallis.

As for Chace Swatek, I didn't know a whole lot about him. Here's pretty much the extent of my knowledge,?from a July 2009 post:
Chace Swatek, another of Bill Swatek's sons, earned a law degree at Pepperdine University (home of Ken Starr) before flunking the California bar exam, flopping in a real-estate project on Alabama's Gulf Coast and slinking home to join daddy's law practice.

I went on in that post to describe my one interaction with Chace Svatek--and it was pretty strange:
I've never found interaction with a Swatek to be terribly edifying. Since my blog is grounded in uncomfortable truths, and the Swateks I've known seem to shun the truth like cockroaches avoid the light, I suspect they don't enjoy their interactions with me.

So imagine my surprise when I returned home the other evening to discover that I had a voice message from Chace Swatek. When I played it, the message was a simple "please call me."

My first guess was that Chace Swatek wanted to huff and puff and threaten me with a defamation lawsuit over a less-than-flattering post I recently authored about his sister, Barret Swatek, a wannabe actress who touts her "conservative family values" while living in a way that appears to be anything but "pro family."

So what happened?
I was prepared for Chace Swatek to threaten me with legal action. So what did he say when I called him back? Try this:

"Oh, I had a question I intended to ask you, but I have it answered."

Hunh? "OK," I said.

After bringing that scintillating conversation to a close, I checked my blog stats to discover that someone (or several someones) had been finding Legal Schnauzer by keying in the keywords "Chace Swatek." And several of those originated from the Alabama State Bar.

Has someone filed a bar complaint against Chace Swatek? If so, Chace is continuing a proud family tradition. Did Chace Swatek think I had filed the bar complaint?

Don't know why he would think that. I certainly have never been his client, and I've had no dealings with him at all. Was Chace concerned that I had come up with proof that he had sent me threatening e-mails, and I had reported him to the bar because of it?

I never did come up with answers to those questions. I hadn't thought much about Chace Swatek since writing that post until I checked my blog stats about 2:30 p.m. yesterday and noticed a lot of traffic from people keying in various searches about Chace Swatek. One of the queries was "Chace Swatek death February 2012."

Mrs. Schnauzer and I treated ourselves yesterday to a belated Valentine's date, a matinee showing of "The Descendants" (a great movie, by the way; four strong thumbs up), and I returned home to find that al.com had reported Chace Swatek's death about 6 p.m.

Before we went to the movie, I told Mrs. Schnauzer about the curious traffic regarding Chace Swatek on my blog stats. "That must be some sort of hoax," she said. "How could he turn up dead?"

Well, it wasn't a hoax, and Chace Swatek did turn up dead.

I'm guessing that the official finding will be a natural death. But if Chace Swatek treated people in the same manner as his father does, I would not be surprised if someone wanted to cause him harm.

Either way, we've all heard the phrase "what goes around, comes around." For those who know what the Swatek family is really all about, those words ring true today.

you choose Q: ?why should I maintain a relationship with a difficult ...

Q: Why should I maintain a relationship with a self-centered, immoral friend who claims to be a Christian but is not living like one? I?m starting to hate her!? ?Cass

A: Hi, Cass. Thank you for writing us and asking us about this friendship. We appreciate hearing from you.

This relationship sounds like it has been exhausting for you. Clearly your friend has issues that are out of your ability to fix. I?m glad she?s on medication, but she really needs, also, to be in therapy with a competent Christian counselor or therapist who can help her face the reasons why she is self-destructive.

There?s little you can do to help this girl make better choices. She?s making poor decisions for reasons that you may never understand. The reasons go deep and my guess is that they were there before you ever met her. So now what do you do?

I think the most important thing for you is to set healthy boundaries with her. It sounds like a cycle of she makes a bad choice, she calls you, you give her advice, she doesn?t listen, she makes another bad choice, she calls you, you give her advice that she doesn?t take, etc.? It goes on and on and it sounds like you are beginning to feel like she is taking advantage of you. She wants you when she wants you, but is not serious about changing.

It may be best to stop giving her advice.? In a kind and gentle way, you can say something like, ?I?m sorry this is happening to you. I?ve told you how I feel and what I think about your situation but you?re not willing or able to listen, so I?m going to continue praying for you and stop telling you what to do. Giving you advice is not working anyway. I care about you so much and want you to get help.?

Face your anger about this head-on and don?t allow it to fester. Your anger may be because you?ve allowed this friendship to take over your life. You can?t be consumed with your friend?s issues. Setting better boundaries will protect you and her and will help to alleviate some of your negative feelings towards her.

Remember that we are all in need of our Savior, Jesus Christ. She is hurting and needs the Lord, but she must be ready to accept Him into her life. You can?t make that happen.? Give her an open invitation to attend church with you anytime, but you don?t have to call her every week and invite her.? She knows she can call you.

A friendship like this can make you feel used and tired. Friends like her tend to take and take in a relationship and give very little. This is something she really needs to face herself.

I hope these thoughts are helpful, Cass. Thank you again for writing.? ?Allison Stevens

Longtime couples: Many still 'intensely in love'

While many assume that the passion of those dizzy, dreamy early days of relationship fade in time, a new survey found 40 percent of those married for at least a decade, such as Sue and Bob Frause, are still very in love.

European Budgets Cut Back on Green Solar and Wind Energy (Time.com)

On Jan. 30, a letter arrived at 10 Downing Street from 101 Members of Parliament, addressed to Prime Minister David Cameron. Its message: Stop taxpayer subsidies for wind power.

The call is being echoed across Europe, where governments are reconsidering what they -- and taxpayers -- can afford in terms of green-energy initiatives in an age of austerity. In the boom times before the global economic crisis, European governments were eager to pump cash into renewable sources of energy to make them competitive with fossil fuels and meet carbon-dioxide-reduction targets. But with pensions, health care and education budgets already feeling the chill, lavish spending on clean energy has become harder to justify. (See the top 10 green trends of 2011.)

Greece, France and the U.K. have slashed subsidies for solar power since the recession began in 2008, and even economic powerhouse Germany has announced it will eliminate government support for solar panels by 2015. Spain -- once the largest solar-energy market in the world -- halted subsidies for new renewable-energy projects altogether two weeks ago.

Has Europe's green-energy agenda fallen prey to the global economic crisis? Not exactly. In fact, many of the solar-power-subsidy cuts are a symptom of how well the industry is doing. "It's a victim of its own success," says David Cunningham, a renewable-energy analyst at Westhouse Securities, a brokerage firm specializing in environmental technology. "The industry has cut costs so quickly that the governments haven't kept in step." (See pictures of the global financial crisis.)

Back when solar panels were quite expensive, governments set subsidy levels high enough to make installation worthwhile for individuals and firms. But as the price of solar modules plummeted (falling 76% since mid-2008), installation became a little too worthwhile. Those who took advantage of subsidies could count on returns of up to 7.5% on their investment. Demand ballooned. Meanwhile, average consumers were stuck paying for the bonanza through an extra charge on their electricity bills to fund the subsidies.

Given the economic climate, it's hardly surprising governments have tried to rein things in. The first big cuts came in 2010, when Germany and Italy pulled back on solar incentives. Then, at the end of 2010, France followed suit by halting its solar feed-in tariffs completely.

Analysts say there is a right way and a wrong way to cut back on clean-energy subsidies, however. Germany, for example, reduced its subsidies gradually to allow the industry to adjust. Spain, on the other hand, mishandled its cutbacks, shaking investor confidence. And the U.K. government's recent attempt at a hurried downsizing has landed it in court, where it is battling environmentalists and industry groups over whether it can legally slash support by 70% for big photovoltaic projects and 51% for home installations. "Germany has been quite skillful at reducing its tariffs and getting a lot of renewable-energy capacity built," says Angus McCrone, a senior analyst at Bloomberg New Energy Finance. "Other countries have been less skillful and ended up shocking the industry." (See how in Germany, the greens saw red over nuclear power extension.)

But it's not just subsidy cuts that threaten Europe's solar manufacturers. China's rise has also cast a shadow over the firms. China has rapidly emerged as the dominant industry player, producing at least half of the world's solar panels in 2010. While cheap panels pouring in from China have driven the installation boom in Europe, they've also put competitors like German solar-panel maker Solon out of business.

The worry is that as European manufacturing firms collapse, even more people will be out of work during a time of economic hardship. But solar-panel makers are only part of the industry. In fact, increasingly automated solar manufacturing employs far fewer people than installation firms, which have seen an upswing in work since Chinese panels have flooded Europe. "In a perverse way, China isn't destroying jobs in the West," says Cunningham. "It's creating more jobs in installation and maintenance."

Still, this hasn't kept China and the West from exchanging barbs over environmental policy. European and American firms complain that Chinese solar-panel makers benefit unfairly from state subsidies, including low-interest loans and cheap power to run their plants. Late last year, American solar-panel manufacturers went so far as to file a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission, which ruled in their favor in December. This could pave the way for the Commerce Department to impose heavy tariffs on Chinese solar-panel imports. China has vowed to retaliate by filing its own claim with its Commerce Ministry alleging unfair U.S. subsidies. (See pictures of a solar-powdred airplane taking flight.)

European clean-energy policies are under threat in another industry as well: aviation. The U.S. and China have formed a rare alliance against a new European Union law requiring airlines using European airports to pay fees for each flight's carbon-dioxide emissions. On Monday, Feb. 6, Beijing banned Chinese airlines from taking part in the E.U. program. The E.U.'s ambassador to China, Markus Ederer, responded by noting that the law would drive up Beijing-to-Brussels ticket prices by just 17.50 yuan (less than $3). "I leave it to you to make a judgment on whether this is too much for saving the earth," he said.

Clean energy has certainly provided ample fuel for global posturing. But there's one renewable -- wind power -- that's unlikely to spark a trade war in the near future. European wind-turbine manufacturers are shielded from competition for now, Cunningham says, despite the fact that you can buy a Chinese turbine for 40% of the price of one from leading European manufacturer Vestas. "These machines need regular operation and maintenance. You're not going to get that with a Chinese turbine." And for the time being, European governments haven't pulled the plug on wind power. Germany, for instance, increased subsidies for offshore wind farms last year. And the U.K. has announced relatively modest cuts of 5% and 10% for offshore and onshore turbine projects, though more could be on the way. Wind power faces stiff opposition from conservative politicians who object to what they see as taxpayer despoilment of the countryside. It remains to be seen whether the coalition government -- which has so far remained committed to strict cuts in carbon emissions -- will listen. (See a video about tapping the power of wind.)

In fact, globally, the outlook for renewable energy is quite sunny. Last year, total new investment in clean energy increased 5%, to $260 billion, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance. That growth occurred despite the continuing economic downturn, tighter profit margins and falling government investments in green subsidies and R&D. In Europe alone, renewable-energy investment rose 3%, to $100 billion, driven by solar installations and offshore wind projects in the North Sea. That's a good sign. Even as government subsidies dry up, it appears the renewable-energy industry is going to be just fine.

Rockville, Md. ARVO Foundation for Eye Research (AFER) congratulates the first AFER/Vistakon Dry Eye Fellowship recipients Andrea Petznick, PhD, and Juan Ding, PhD. Each received $40,000 to support their dry eye research and will be honored at the 2012 ARVO Annual Meeting on Sunday, May 6, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

"AFER is honored to provide funding for dry eye research, through the support of Vistakon, for the first time in the foundation's history." said AFER Chair Nicolas G. Bazan, MD, PhD, FARVO. "Our objective is to help both recipients complete their ambitious research to improve the treatment of and eventually lead to a cure for one of the most common eye disorders."

Petznick, a postdoctoral research fellow, Singapore Eye Research Institute, will conduct clinical research that leads to better management and therapy for Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) and/or standardized international practices for MGD care that reduce patient pain and discomfort. Specifically, her study involves novel heat treatments and their impact on the tear film, meibum composition and glandular structures.

Ding, a postdoctoral fellow at the Schepens Eye Research Institute at Harvard Medical School, will examine basic research on mechanisms that cause MGD terminal duct obstruction and/or altered MGD secretory composition, including the influence of isotretinoin on MGD.

Dry eye syndrome is a chronic issue from which over 10 million Americans suffer. It occurs when the eye does not produce tears properly or when they evaporate too quickly. The most common cause of dry eye syndrome is normal aging; however, lifestyles and climates can contribute to this disease. If left untreated, this disease can lead to pain, ulcers or scars on the cornea.

The Vistakon Dry Eye fellowships are presented to investigators who are under the age of 45 at the application deadline. Fellowships are for a period of one year and will commence within six months of the award notification.

Baseball Hall to begin drug education program

(AP) ? The Baseball Hall of Fame is starting a drug education program for students and young adults ? in the same year Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Sammy Sosa will appear on ballot for the first time after careers tainted by steroid accusations.

While adding PEDs to RBIs and ERAs among its interests, the Hall emphasized Wednesday that its new initiative wasn't tied to the former stars up for election or the people who will choose them.

"It is not intended to cast a directive to voters about Hall of Fame worthy candidates," shrine president Jeff Idelson said.

Mark McGwire, 10th on the career home run list, has never come close to election after admitting he used steroids and human growth hormone. Neither has Rafael Palmeiro, who topped 500 homers and 3,000 hits but was suspended for a positive test for performance-enhancing drugs.

Bonds, a seven-time NL MVP, and Clemens, a seven-time Cy Young Award winner, will appear on the ballot mailed to voters around Thanksgiving. So will Sosa, who hit 609 homers.

The Hall makes no attempt to influence members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America when they pick the players for Cooperstown.

"Hall of Fame voting has been a part of this nation's fabric since 1936, and has touted the virtues of character, sportsmanship and integrity, along with the contributions to the game, as integral qualifications for earning election," Idelson said.

Education is part of the mission for the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, along with honoring the game's greats and displaying artifacts.

The Hall plans to promote a healthy lifestyle that is free of PEDs. The program will be called "Be A Superior Example," or "BASE" for short, and will work with the Taylor Hooton Foundation and the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society.

In the next 18 months, the Hall hopes to conduct a nationwide survey, hold a summit in Cooperstown on drugs and begin a national registry for people to pledge commitments to live free of PEDs.

"It is through the education programs that we are able to fulfill our mission of providing context to the issues that have faced our game, as a reflection of American history, throughout its history," Idelson said.

The program is a further way of teaching youth "about American culture, with topics ranging from history and character education to math and science, through the lens of baseball," he said.

Homeschooling Dads - Special Forces What's the Difference?

Homeschooling dads are the ?Special Forces? of the married-working-male world. We advise the instructors. We encourage the warriors. We support the combatants. We pick up our weapons and fightright along with our allies.

Home School is our business. And business is good.?
Homeschooling Dads as Advisors

Sometimes our advice is solicited and sometimes it isn?t. In either case, as with love and war, it falls on us dads to be diplomatic.
Our ally (the Homeschooling Mom) may not to seem to be working off the same battle plan at times but always remember; politics makes strange bedfellows. The savvy soldier knows how to make these alliances work!

Take the time to listen. She is in the battle with us and needs our input. Wait for her to ask what you think before contributing. Visit Homeschooling Curriculums to get the Intelligence on the situation prior to engaging in your role as advisor.

Top Secret!:? Your partner may come up with a plan of attack on her own. Let her talk through the situation while you offer knowing nods and grunts. Being a good leader is knowing when to listen and in this case she may come up the solution and you?ll still be an effective ally!

The homeschooling dad as the Encourager

Being a teacher is a thankless job. Being a mother/teacher is even more so. Our partners need our encouragement. After all they?ve been around kids all day. Our children get frustrated too.

It?s up to us to offer homeschool encouragement and forestall any infighting among the troops.

As soon as you get home engage the kids. They?ll be ready for a break even if the school day isn?t over. After they visit with you let them watch a quick show or play so you can spend a little time with your wife.

There will be days that she?s just ready to wave the white flag! Make sure you?re informed on the Dad?s Pros and Cons of Homeschooling prior to the engagement.

Dad as Supporter
?The support role comes naturally to homeschooling dads. We?re usually the main financial contributors to the home school family. We earn the money and pay the bills.

The job doesn?t end with picking up the KFC after work. Sorry, tired soldier. The support role is never done. It may involve giving your toddler a bath or worse yet, THE DISHES!

If you?re having trouble making your home school family?s ends meet or if you just need a little extra cash to get ahead you might have to write your own homeschooling site??

? or whatever else you may be passionate about.

Dad as the Fighter
Yes, this is our fight too and sometimes we need to roll up our sleeves and wade in swinging. There?s a virtual arsenal right within your own fort.

Us Special Forces types have to be jacks of all trades but each of us has our own niche. Math may be your strong suit. Or maybe you enjoy reading.

If those aren?t your weapons of choice visit the Homeschooling Games page and grab something from the weapons rack! Get in the FIGHT!

Dad as the Leader
You?ve delegated the home school teaching to your partner. You?ve given your family the resources. Now, GET OUT OF THE WAY and let her home school!

You know that good leaders see the big picture and take care of details. Take care of your family?s needs so their education will run smoothly.

Protect them. If you haven?t done so check out the Homeschool Legal Defense page to ensure that nothing interferes with your home school mission.

Seminar designs exhibit for Chinese New Year

In celebration of the Chinese New Year that began two weeks ago, a new exhibit on display in the inner lobby of List Art Center showcases a collection of images ? meant to ward off evil and bring good luck in the coming year ? to herald the Year of the Dragon.

"The Shape of Good Fortune: Welcoming the Year of the Dragon" was spearheaded by students who took HIAA 1040H: "Shape of Good Fortune," taught by Professor of History of Art and Architecture Maggie Bickford last semester. Students learned about the Chinese New Year in the course and were required to oversee all aspects of the exhibition, including extensive research, object selection, writing labels and design.

The exhibit was assembled during winter break just in time for its opening Jan. 23, also the start of the Chinese New Year.

Bickford described her involvement as facilitative. "There was a lot of graphic design talent in the class, which was unusual," she said. "But there was a high standard for the exhibition."

Students used 3-D simulation software to help design the exhibition to scale. Amy Huang GS, the only graduate student in the class, helped with layout of the exhibition and said she was proud to see her work come together.

The students also made a blog to showcase their work.

Bickford said her students were wonderful. "I'm very proud of them. (The exhibition) exceeded my expectations."

Huang explained that the featured images ? traditionally hung around the house during the Chinese New Year ?were used by both poor farmers and emperors. "Imagery travels through social classes and ages but also gets updated," she said.

Bickford said some of the objects displayed were collected by missionaries in the 20th century and auctioned off, and they are now a part of her personal collection. Other objects are modern reproductions of traditional paintings.

Jeremy Korn '13 researched the scholar Zhong Kui, known as the Demon Queller, during the seminar. Over winter break, a graduate student from Beijing returned to campus with a painting of Zhong Kui made by a family friend. The painting was included in the exhibition.

Each image is accompanied by a student-written panel describing the image's history and significance. Because it is the Year of the Dragon, Anya Eber '12.5 worked on a section that focused on this year's zodiac as well as the exhibit as a whole.

"I realized how many different meanings there are to images," said Huang, who hails from Taiwan.

The opening ceremony, held Feb. 3, was a "crucial point in the exhibition," Eber said. The ceremony included food and a performance from Brown Lion Dance, a student group that performs a traditional Chinese dance in which dancers imitate the motions of a lion.

This project was made possible by support from the Year of China committee and the Department of History of Art and Architecture.

The exhibition will be a stop in the Lantern Festival Gallery Walk, a guided tour of Year of China related exhibits that will take place Feb. 6. It will run through Feb. 16.
